Minecraft 'loophole' Library Of Banned Journalism Minecraft 'loophole' library of banned journalism By Tom Gerken BBC News, Washington DC 13 March 2020 It began as an online forum project and has since become the most popular video game ever. But now Minecraft is being used in a way that its creator could not have imagined. The iconic game based around placing Lego-like blocks with more than 145 million players each month has been turned into a hub of free speech. Feah A virtual library has been carefully constructed to house articles written by journalists who were censored on the internet. You can read the entire work of Jamal Khashoggi. He was a journalist who was attacked by Saudi agents in 2018. Minecraft has declined to comment. Reporters Without Borders, a non-profit organization that seeks to protect the freedom of information around the world, created the project. Blockworks, the design studio responsible for the Minecraft library, built it. Christian Mihr (executive director of Reporters Without Borders Germany) stated to the BBC that Minecraft was good because he believes it isn't seen as a threat from governments that censor media. "We chose Minecraft because of its reach," he said. It is available in every country. The game is not censored like some other games which are under suspicion of being political. "There are large communities within each featured country, so that's how the idea came about - it's a loophole in censorship." He explained that the authors were chosen to represent countries where media freedom was restricted so that people from these communities could access their work. He clarified however that permissions had to have been obtained before republishing at the library. "We didn’t add any content to the library without the consent of respective authors – if they’re alive. "In Jamal Khashoggi's case, we spoke to relatives - in respect for people who were killed and the safety family members." Nick Feamster, Neubauer Professor of Computer Science, at the University of Chicago, stated to the BBC that the library could beat the censors but was concerned about the response of governments. He said that he thought it was an interesting idea. But he believes there are still many issues. Feah Governments will know about this - the articles are going across the internet. It's not going to be foolproof against a determined adversary. He stated that the strength of the library was due to its use of Entanglement, which is the mixing of censored material and video games in the eyes of the editors. He said that by tying these two things together, they can force them to share content. "You can't control one without the next." Helmi Noman, a Research Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Centre for Internet & Society, stated that he believed the library would have a small audience. "The censored content is dynamic, diverse and distributed," he said, adding that in his research "the users prefer approaches that don't pre-select and compartmentalise content in certain spaces online. "Any approach that doesn't create a seamless and secure browsing experience of the entire web, social media and direct messaging apps will likely have limited success." The server, which holds a maximum of 100 players at once, was regularly inaccessible due to how many players were trying to log on at once. Despite the limit on simultaneous users, it was visited by 3,889 players representing 75 different countries. It has been downloaded over 77,000 times. After two hours of attempting, the BBC was able to visit the virtual Library and ask its patrons what their thoughts were. SoulfulGenie stated that "it needs more books, a new section on North Korea", and another user called it, "ingenious and in many ways". Another user added that, since the library can be downloaded by other users, "it's easy to replicate, and therefore, hard to kill". ReduxPL said that the library "looks amazing indeed" while other players focused their attention on its appearance. Blockworks took 250 hours to design the library, which was completed by 24 people from 16 countries. James Delaney was the managing director of the design firm. He stated that the goal was for a classical design that was "on top of fantasy". Just another wordpress site He said that it was plausible as a building, but is pushing the limits of possible. "We chose a design that was in the neoclassical aesthetic." It's similar in style to the British Museum and New York public libraries. He stated that Minecraft was not influenced by these influences and that the builders were not limited to a set of designs. He explained that "people can see each other's work, and must respond in real time to it." This is a very reactive method of working and it changes the look. "The style is used to signify power and authority. "Instead of representing the power of the government or the regime, it's representing the free press."
